Meetings
Increasing your value as a technical communicator is the overall theme of the 2009-2010 SWO-STC programs. Keeping options open, increasing and improving capabilities, and learning to do more even though budgets are smaller and resources are reduced—these are all ways we can improve our chances for success in challenging times.
SWO-STC meets every month between September and May. This year’s meetings include events like:
- Face-to-face gatherings featuring speakers on topics ranging from effective networking to independent contracting. The alternating venues for in-person meetings are the West Chester and Dayton branches of Indiana Wesleyan University.
- A full day workshop by distinguished consultant and trainer Alan Houser on Minimalist Documentation. Alan is also an STC Associate Fellow.
- A virtual meeting (one of our winter webinars, for weeks when winds are blustery and roads are bad) focusing on the effective use of tools for professional communicators.

Recycle Your Office Supplies
This year, SWO-STC is helping support Crayons to Computers, an organization that provides school supplies and other materials to help teachers teach and children learn, especially in elementary classrooms in lower income areas. Most teachers spend $500 to $1000 of their own money every year providing supplies for their students, and C2C tries to reduce this. While they no longer take old computers, they are always in need of pens and pencils, crayons, unused paper, binder clips, and anything else that can be used in a classroom. They have taken plastic pails that kitty litter comes in.
Please bring your donations to the SWO-STC meeting every month. We’ll make sure they get to Crayons to Computers. You can learn more about this organization at http://www.crayons2computers.org.
