In this webinar, we’ll explore how different dimensions of personality affect the way we write. For example, extroverts may prefer to discuss the content with the subject matter experts (SMEs) before they begin writing; introverts, on the other hand, may prefer to organize the material and write as much as they can, then meet with the SMEs to fill in the gaps. By writing according to our personality preferences, we can optimize our efficiency. We can also learn to incorporate our non-preferred functions to round out our work for a more polished final product.

What if your boss said, “I want you to bury the information about the problems?”

Or, “I want you to tone it down some. Otherwise, our client will throw a fit.”

Or what if your boss simply edits out what you conscientiously put in?

Do you have ready responses for those nuanced differences? Do your responses depend on how desperately you need that job?

Tough decisions in a tough job market. But don’t throw up your hands, and don’t put on a blindfold as you navigate the minefield. DO come to the STC-SWO meeting on May 19 where you’ll hear how these sorts of minefields are more common than you might think—and how to avoid them where possible and defuse them where necessary.

In addition, at our May meeting, volunteers who have contributed time and expertise to SWO over the past year will be recognized. Our speaker is John Bryan, vice provost of the University of Cincinnati, associate professor of English at UC, and long time editor of the STC Intercom column, Ethics Case.

After working for ten years as a professional writer, communications director, and marketing manager for engineering consulting firms in Denver and Missouri, Bryan came to UC in 1989. Since then he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in professional writing. In 1995, he became associate dean of the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences. In 1997, he became dean of UC’s University College. He returned to the English Department in 2004 and now also serves as UC’s vice provost.
