Space X – A New TechComm Frontier?

by Karen on May 4, 2012

Techcomm in space? Might be worth checking out.

Early this month, California-based Space Exploration Technologies, known as Space X, will launch its Dragon Spacecraft from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.  Atop a Falcon 9 rocket, also built by Space X, the unmanned spacecraft will carry 1,200 pounds of non-critical cargo to the International Space Station and return to Earth.

The 21-day Space X mission is the first to see a privately built and funded spacecraft rendezvous with the International Space Station. This mission is expected to pave the way toward regular operational commercial cargo mission.

“We have launched the rocket twice and the spacecraft once, so they are pretty new and the proximity operations are our first test in space,” according to Elon Musk, Space X owner and chief designer. “I think it’s important to appreciate that this is fairly tricky and it is important to remember that we are hitting a target within a few inches while it moves 17,000 mph.”

If this test flight is successful, the Dragon will become operational and launch regular supplies to the station.  Unlike other cargo carriers, the Dragon can make round trips, fully loaded each way. Cargo transfer works like this:

  • Dragon will approach within range of the station’s large robotic arm.
  • The arm will berth the capsule to the station, where astronauts will unload it.
  • The station will be reloaded with 1,400 pounds of material for return to Earth.

End of Perfectionism

April 5, 2012

Not so long ago, “perfectionism” was a virtue. Today it is seen as more of a hindrance, and I’m glad! It has tormented me much of my life. It is divisive and tends to make me stressed rather than happy. I also tend to “not play well with others” when I am being perfectionistic. It [...]

Tired of Bullets?

I saw this article from ProEdit last week and thought it presented creative alternatives to using bulleted lists. Bullets into oblivion may not [...]
